Elon Musk Faces Major Setback: Court Imposes Ban on ‘X’ in This Country—What Did the Company Do Wrong?
Brazil has delivered a significant setback to Elon Musk, the world’s richest person. The country has imposed a ban on X, the platform owned by Musk. X was instructed by Brazil to appoint a legal representative within the country, but the company ignored this order, leading to the enforcement action against it.
What’s Really Happening?
According to the Brazilian government, X will remain fully banned until it complies with all court orders and pays the fines imposed. Notably, a dispute between Elon Musk and Brazil has been ongoing since April.
In that month, a Brazilian court imposed bans on several social media accounts, accusing them of spreading false information. In response to the court’s orders, Musk stated that freedom of speech is a cornerstone of any democracy.
He also criticized Brazilian judges, claiming they are not representing the public’s interests and are succumbing to political pressure, thus undermining the system.
What Did the Court Order?
On Wednesday night, a judge from Brazil’s Supreme Court warned Elon Musk that if X does not comply with the order to appoint a representative in Brazil, a ban on its operations in the country will be imposed. The Supreme Court set a 24-hour deadline for compliance with the order. Since the beginning of this month, X has not had a representative in Brazil.
