Testing of India’s First Indigenous Smart TV Operating System
Reliance Industries has started testing the country’s first indigenous smart television operating system (OS). This operating system will be based on Google’s Android OS. It will compete with Samsung’s Tizen OS and LG WebOS. According to media reports, Reliance is testing the Jio TV OS in partnership with Google.
Competition with Leading Television Manufacturer OS
Based on Google’s Android platform, Jio TV OS will compete with top television manufacturer OS like Samsung’s Tizen OS, LG’s WebOS, Skyworth’s Coolita OS, and Hisense Group’s Vida OS.
Reliance to Launch New Smart TV Operating System
According to a report, Reliance will provide its TV OS to some local TV manufacturers for beta testing to gather feedback and fix bugs. The Jio OS-powered smart TVs will be launched in 4K and full HD, and Reliance is negotiating licensing deals with other local TV products. Reliance sells smart TVs under the BPL and ReConnect brands. Most of these models will be in the entry-level market.
Bundling and Revenue Enhancement
Jio may bundle its broadband connection and increase revenue through advertisements. It will also bundle other apps like JioCinema with the Jio smart TV OS. Last October, Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, announced plans to create a smart TV operating system.
No Licensing Fees
Reliance does not charge any licensing fees for the Jio TV OS as it aims to become highly popular. It seeks to partner with several local and small brands to increase adoption.
