In-Flight WiFi Now Available in Indian Airspace Above 3,000 Meters
Flight WiFi Access Now Approved: Connect at 3,000 Meters Above in Indian Airspace
The government announced on Monday that passengers will soon be able to use WiFi on flights, with access granted once aircraft reach an altitude of 3,000 meters within Indian airspace. Under the new Flight and Maritime Connectivity (Amendment) Rules, 2024, passengers may use electronic devices with internet connectivity through WiFi once the aircraft reaches this height, ensuring no interference with ground telecom services.
New Rules for In-Flight WiFi Usage
Per the Department of Telecommunications, WiFi services will only activate in Indian airspace once a flight reaches 3,000 meters. This regulation aims to maintain the integrity of ground telecommunications. This permission is limited to Indian airspace and specific guidelines ensure service does not interfere with other networks on the ground.
Captain Authority and Operational Control
The aircraft captain has authority over enabling or disabling WiFi and may switch it off during takeoff, landing, or unstable flight conditions. Once the plane reaches a stable speed, WiFi services may remain active for passenger use.
