Tragic Accident in Jammu’s Akhnoor: Bus Plunges 150 Feet into Gorge
A bus carrying devotees on Thursday afternoon met with a tragic accident as it plunged 150 feet into a gorge. This unfortunate incident resulted in the death of 22 individuals, while 69 others sustained injuries, and the death toll may rise.
The injured have been admitted to the hospitals in Jammu’s Akhnoor and the Government Medical College Hospital in Jammu.
The accident occurred on the Jammu-Poonch Highway. A police official stated that the bus was carrying approximately 90 passengers from Uttar Pradesh. They were on their way to Shiva Khori. Rescue operations are underway, and the cause of the accident is yet to be determined.
The central government has announced compensation of 2-2 lakh rupees for the families of the deceased, along with 50,000 rupees for the injured.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Draupadi Murmu have expressed their grief over this incident. President Draupadi Murmu stated, “I am saddened by the news of the bus accident near Akhnoor in Jammu, resulting in loss of lives. My heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.”
Similar tragic incident happened 6 months ago
On November 15, 2023, another tragic incident occurred when a bus plunged 300 feet into a gorge in the Assar area of Doda district in Jammu and Kashmir. This accident claimed the lives of 38 people, including 9 women. The bus was traveling from Kishtwar to Jammu. Local people, along with police and SDRF teams, also conducted rescue and relief operations.
The bus had fallen into a garbage dump, making it necessary to extract the bodies and injured from the bus. The injured were admitted to hospitals in Kishtwar district and the Government Medical College (GMC) in Doda. Some people were airlifted to Jammu for treatment.
