Dr. Mona Desai’s Insights on Monkeypox Virus
In a conversation with Divya Bhaskar, expert Dr. Mona Desai emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the monkeypox virus. She mentioned, “People need to be more informed about monkeypox. If someone plans to travel to areas where the virus is present, they should take certain precautions.”
Where Did the Monkeypox Virus Originate?
Dr. Mona Desai: The monkeypox virus originated in African countries. Monkeys were kept for research purposes, where symptoms of the virus were observed. These symptoms were then transmitted to individuals handling the monkeys. When these individuals traveled to other countries, the virus spread to others. This virus spreads through human-to-human transmission. Monkeypox is similar to the smallpox virus, sharing the same genus. Unlike smallpox, which had a vaccine, there is currently no vaccine for monkeypox. If there were, it could help prevent the spread of the virus.
Which Countries Are Affected by the Monkeypox Virus?
Dr. Mona Desai: The majority of monkeypox cases are found in African countries, and the virus is gradually spreading to other regions.
What Precautions Should International Travelers Take?
Dr. Mona Desai: If someone is traveling internationally, particularly to African countries, they should exercise extreme caution. The monkeypox virus spreads through animals. People visiting African countries often go to see wildlife, so it’s essential to be cautious around animals in these regions.
What Are the Symptoms of the Monkeypox Virus?
Dr. Mona Desai: The initial symptoms of the monkeypox virus include fever, cold, and cough. Later, small red bumps appear on the skin, followed by blister-like lesions. These symptoms can last from 5 to 21 days.
How Does Monkeypox Affect Children?
Dr. Mona Desai: Children are more susceptible to contracting monkeypox because their immune systems are weaker. Additionally, adults with compromised immune systems may also contract the virus more easily.
How Does the Monkeypox Virus Spread?
Dr. Mona Desai: The monkeypox virus spreads rapidly. If an infected person coughs or sneezes, the virus can spread through respiratory droplets. Additionally, if someone touches the blisters on an infected person’s skin and then touches another surface, the virus can spread.
What Precautions Should Be Taken After Contracting the Monkeypox Virus?
Dr. Mona Desai: Once infected with the monkeypox virus, the symptoms can last from 5 to 21 days. It is important to avoid scratching the affected areas. The infected person should be isolated. Medications should be taken for cold or cough, and ointments should be applied to the itchy areas using a cloth. Children should be dressed in light cotton clothes and given nutritious food to boost their immune systems.
