Nexon to Be India’s First Turbo CNG Car with Twin Cylinder Tech, Dual Gearbox Options
Tata Motors is gearing up to launch the CNG variant of its most popular car, the Nexon, after launching the coupe-style SUV Curvv on September 2. According to media reports, this will be the country’s first CNG car with a turbo engine option.
Additionally, the SUV will feature twin-cylinder technology with the option of two gearboxes. Tata had launched the facelift version of the Nexon in September last year and later unveiled its CNG version’s concept model at the India Mobility Show in Delhi this year.
Expected Pricing and Competition with Maruti Suzuki Brezza CNG
The Tata Nexon is priced starting at ₹8.10 lakh, going up to ₹14.74 lakh for the top variant (all prices are ex-showroom). The CNG variant is expected to be priced ₹70,000 to ₹80,000 more than the standard variant. It will directly compete with the Maruti Suzuki Brezza CNG.
Exterior: New Design LED Setup and Alloy Wheels
In terms of design, the Nexon CNG will look similar to the petrol variant. The front will feature new LED DRLs (Daytime Running Lights) with a split headlamp setup. LED headlamps will be placed on the sporty bumper below.
On the sides, 16-inch diamond-cut dual-tone alloy wheels will be available. The rear will feature fully connected LED taillights, which the company calls the ‘X Factor Tail Lamp.’ It will also come with welcome and goodbye functions.
Interior: Spacious Boot with Twin-Cylinder Technology
Inside the car, you’ll find a two-spoke, flat-bottom steering wheel, a touch panel HVAC unit on the dashboard, and a new gear selector on the center console. The Tata Nexon CNG will also feature a new 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster.
The car may offer ventilated front seats. The most significant change will be in the boot, where you’ll see the twin-cylinder technology. This technology will include a twin-cylinder setup with a 60-liter capacity (two 30-liter cylinders). This will provide the Nexon with more boot space (trunk space) compared to other CNG cars.
Safety Features: Gas Leak Detection and More
Like other models, the Tata Nexon iCNG will include the safety feature of gas leak detection. In the event of a CNG leakage, the leak detection technology will automatically shift the vehicle from CNG to petrol mode. This technology will also alert the driver about the gas leak.
Additionally, a micro switch will be provided to keep the car off while refueling. This switch shuts off the ignition as soon as the fuel cap is opened. The car won’t start until the fuel cap is securely closed. It also provides a ‘Close Fuel Lid’ alert on the instrument cluster.
Comfort Features: Electric Sunroof with Voice Command
This car will be equipped with several advanced features. It will include Tata’s IRA 2.0 mobile-connected technology, a voice-assisted electric sunroof, JBL 9-speaker sound system, wireless charger, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and first-in-segment navigation display on the instrument cluster. Additionally, the top variant will offer cruise control, height-adjustable driver seat, leather upholstery, and an electric sunroof with voice command.
Safety Features: 360-Degree Camera and TPMS
The new generation Nexon will come with new safety features, including a 360-degree camera, front and rear parking sensors, first-in-segment blind-view monitor, ESP, 6 airbags, hill-hold control, roll-over mitigation, traction control, ISOFIX child anchor seats, and TPMS.
Performance: 1.2-Liter Three-Cylinder Turbocharged Petrol Engine
For performance, the car will feature a 1.2-liter three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, generating 118 hp of power and 170Nm of torque in petrol mode. The specifications for the CNG mode have not been disclosed yet, but this will be the country’s first car to offer a CNG setup with a turbocharged petrol engine. For transmission, this engine may come with options for a 5-speed manual gearbox and a 6-speed automatic gearbox.
