According to Congress sources, Bhupinder Hooda advocated for tickets for Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia during the Central Election Committee meeting. Hooda argued that supporting the wrestlers would garner public support for Congress in Haryana.

The Central Election Committee agreed after discussions, but left the final decision on contesting and seat selection to Vinesh and Bajrang.

Bajrang Punia Asked for Badli Seat in Jhajjar

Bajrang Punia had asked for the Badli seat in Jhajjar, but Congress has a strong candidate there, Kuldeep Vats. Bajrang was also offered options in Bhiwani, Bahadurgarh, and the Rai seat in Sonipat.

The Central Election Committee is expected to finalize the tickets for both wrestlers in a meeting this evening.

After Vinesh missed a medal despite winning three fights in a day at the Paris Olympics, she returned to India on August 17. She was given a grand welcome at Delhi airport, and MP Dipendra Singh Hooda welcomed her and escorted her to Gurugram.

Vinesh Phogat had written an open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating she would return her medal. Before this, wrestler Sakshi Malik had announced her retirement from the sport. Wrestler Bajrang Punia also left his Padma Shri award outside the Prime Minister’s residence.
