Tragic Hotel Fire in Turkey: 66 Dead, 51 Injured as Guests Escape Using Makeshift Rope
A devastating fire broke out on Tuesday at Kartalkaya Ski Resort in Turkey’s Bolu province, claiming the lives of 66 people and leaving 51 others injured. Many guests, panicked by the flames, jumped from the 11th floor in a desperate bid to escape, resulting in severe injuries and fatalities.
Fire Breaks Out in the Early Hours
The fire erupted at approximately 3:30 AM local time (6:00 AM IST), engulfing the 11-story hotel. The cause of the fire remains unknown. According to officials, the incident led to chaos as guests scrambled to escape.

Challenges in Rescue Operations
Kartalkaya Ski Resort is located atop a rocky terrain, making it difficult for fire trucks to reach the site promptly. This delay hindered rescue efforts. Local media reported that 30 fire engines, 28 ambulances, and 267 emergency personnel were deployed to combat the fire and assist the injured.

Overcrowding Adds to the Tragedy
The resort, a popular destination situated about 300 kilometers east of Istanbul in the Köroğlu Mountains, was bustling due to school holidays in Turkey. At the time of the incident, the hotel housed 234 guests. Nearby hotels were evacuated as a precautionary measure to ensure safety.
Turkish President Orders Investigation
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced that an investigation is underway to identify those responsible for the tragedy. He assured the public that strict action would be taken against the culprits.

Previous Incidents in Turkey
This incident follows another tragedy in Turkey’s Muğla province, where a helicopter crash claimed four lives, including two pilots and a doctor. The helicopter collided with a hospital building due to heavy fog, highlighting the challenges faced during emergency situations.

Safety Measures and Next Steps
As rescue operations continue, authorities are urging ski resort operators to enhance safety protocols. This tragic event serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety measures in public spaces, especially during peak holiday seasons.
