On Monday, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi arrived in Parliament carrying a bag supporting Palestine. The bag read, “Palestine Will Be Free” and featured symbols like a peace dove, watermelon, and olive branches, which are considered symbols of Palestinian unity.
Priyanka Criticized Israel’s Actions in June 2024
Earlier in June 2024, Priyanka had criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Her remarks followed Netanyahu’s speech in the US Congress, where he defended the war in Gaza. Priyanka accused the Israeli government of committing brutal massacres in Gaza.

On X (formerly Twitter), Priyanka wrote, “It is the moral responsibility of every right-thinking individual and government worldwide to condemn Israel’s massacres and exert pressure to stop them.”
Priyanka Defends Her Choice of Bag
When asked about her bag, Priyanka responded:
“I have spoken about my views many times. Who decides what I should wear? This is the kind of patriarchal mindset that has dictated what women should or shouldn’t wear for years. I don’t believe in that, and I will wear what I wish.”

The bag Priyanka carried featured several symbols of Palestinian identity, including a watermelon, olive branch, Palestinian embroidery, and a peace dove. These symbols signify resistance and solidarity with Palestine.
Israel-Palestine Conflict Claims Over 45,000 Lives
The conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza has been ongoing for over a year. So far, more than 45,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks. Additionally, two Hamas leaders, Ismail Haniyeh and Yahya Sinwar, have been killed. Since their deaths, no new leadership announcements have been made by Hamas in Gaza.

During Monday’s Question Hour in the Lok Sabha, Priyanka raised concerns about the plight of Hindu and Christian minorities in Bangladesh. She urged the Indian government to take a stand, engage in discussions, and support these communities.

Priyanka also highlighted an incident where an iconic photograph of Pakistan’s army surrendering to the Indian army during the 1971 war was removed from the Army Headquarters. On Vijay Diwas, she paid tribute to the brave soldiers of the 1971 war and saluted former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for her courageous leadership, which led to India’s victory.
India’s Support for Palestine
India has historically supported Palestine. In the UN General Assembly, India backed a resolution urging Israel to withdraw from Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem. This resolution, introduced by Senegal, was supported by 157 countries and called for just and lasting peace in West Asia.
