Traffic Woes: Single Entry-Exit Gate at Prahladnagar’s Multi-Level Parking

The city’s traffic problem is increasing day by day. Citizens are using more vehicles to commute to their workplaces, which is exacerbating parking issues. The multilevel parking facility constructed by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation at Prahladnagar and Corporate Road will begin operations six months after its inauguration. The entry and exit points of the multilevel parking are on the same side, which might worsen the traffic problem instead of alleviating it. Additionally, if you plan to park, you’ll need to take a U-turn on Corporate Road. If you’re coming from the Shyamal side, you will need to take a U-turn on Corporate Road and travel about 80 to 100 meters. Similarly, if coming from SG Highway, you will need to take a U-turn on Corporate Road and travel about 50 meters. Currently, people park their vehicles on the road in front of Sales India’s complex from Sales India to Corporate Road.

U-Turn Required to Access Multilevel Parking

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has constructed a multilevel parking facility near Prahladnagar Four Roads in the western part of the city. The eight-story building includes pay-and-park facilities on four floors. The entry and exit gates for the multilevel parking are located on Corporate Road rather than the main road, which is a very narrow road. To access the multilevel parking, you will need to take a U-turn from Corporate Road via Prahladnagar Road. The entrance and exit for parking on the basement and the second, third, and fourth floors are on the same route.

Traffic Problems Due to Poor Design

To ensure smooth traffic flow in the multilevel parking, the entry and exit points should be separate. In Prahladnagar multilevel parking, access to parking up to three floors is via Corporate Road, and the exit is also from there. Since this multilevel parking is located at Prahladnagar Four Roads, there is a high possibility of traffic jams if signals are red and vehicles exit simultaneously. The problem might arise due to increased vehicle movement from one side. The lack of a proper design by municipal corporation officials and design consultants could further exacerbate traffic issues.

Mandatory U-Turn from Prahladnagar Four Roads to Corporate Road

For vehicle owners near Prahladnagar Four Roads and surrounding buildings on Makarba-Corporate Road, this multilevel parking will be useful. Vehicle owners on Corporate Road will face less inconvenience, but those parking on Shyamal Four Roads and SG Highway will be required to take a mandatory U-turn from Prahladnagar Four Roads to Corporate Road. The ground floor, first floor, and floors five through eight of the multilevel parking building house shops and offices. The entry gate for the ground floor and first floor is positioned at the front, and parking for these floors is also provided in the common plot ahead.

Standing Committee to Approve Contract Proposal Today

The inauguration of the Prahladnagar multilevel parking and commercial building was done by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in February 2024. However, a contract for operating the multilevel parking was not awarded because the tender process was incomplete. As a result, the multilevel parking has not yet started operating. With the tender process now complete, today, the Standing Committee meeting will approve a contract proposal for a contractor named Sangam Arts. The contractor’s offer of ₹16.35 lakh against the annual requirement of ₹5.98 lakh for operating the pay-and-park facility is likely to be approved.
