PM Modi’s Visit to Kanyakumari: A Tribute to Vivekananda
Kanyakumari, where the eastern and western coasts of India converge, is also the confluence of the Indian Ocean, the Bay of Bengal, and the Arabian Sea. It holds historical significance as the place where Swami Vivekananda found his life’s purpose.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, influenced by Vivekananda, arrived at this historic location after concluding over 70 days of election campaigning. He traveled by helicopter from Thiruvananthapuram to Kanyakumari and immediately visited the Bhagavathy Amman Temple before heading to the Vivekananda Rock Memorial for meditation.
Wearing a traditional dhoti and white shawl, PM Modi performed rituals and circumambulated the sanctum, receiving special aarti and prasad, including a shawl and a framed photograph of the deity. Before starting his meditation, he paused briefly on the steps leading to the memorial. This visit marks a significant moment, reflecting Modi’s reverence for Swami Vivekananda’s legacy.
Opposition Criticizes PM Modi’s Meditation
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has claimed that PM Modi’s meditation at the Vivekananda Rock Memorial violates the Model Code of Conduct, suggesting that Modi’s “permanent meditation” will start after June 4.
Criticism also came from other political leaders, including Akhilesh Yadav and Mamata Banerjee. Banerjee remarked that Modi retreats to air-conditioned comfort after every election, implying that his meditation session is a strategic move rather than a genuine spiritual endeavor.
