After the death of a student at Patan Medical College, 15 senior students have been suspended, and complaints have been filed against them. This action follows the preliminary report from the ragging committee. Meanwhile, there was strong opposition from the ABVP at Dharpur Medical College. Late at night, protests took place, leading to a scuffle with the police.

A student tragically passed away after suddenly fainting on Saturday night at Dharpur Medical College, located on the Patan-Unza road. Upon learning of the incident, the police rushed to the college. The student’s body was sent for a post-mortem examination. 

It was revealed that the student’s death was caused by ragging by senior students at the college. Dr. Jayesh Panchal stated that the cause of death appeared to be internal injuries. The exact cause of death will be confirmed after the post-mortem report is received.

Following the suspension of 15 senior students in connection with the incident, complaints have been filed against them. The complaint alleges that the victim, along with several other students, was made to stand continuously for about three and a half hours, forced to sing songs, dance, and verbally abused. 

They were also not allowed to leave the room and were subjected to both mental and physical harassment as part of ragging. The deceased, Anil Methania, was originally from Jesda village in the Dhrangadhra taluka of Surendranagar district and had joined Dharpur Medical College just a month ago.

Ragging Chat Messages Surface

In this incident, WhatsApp chat messages related to ragging have also surfaced. The chat, which took place on a WhatsApp group, suggests that students were called according to their city and area to engage in ragging activities. The messages in the group have been deleted, and there are suspicions that other students may have also fallen victim to ragging.

Student Describes Harassment During Ragging Incident

One student shared their experience, stating that on Saturday night, around 8:30 PM, they were called to a room following a WhatsApp message. When they arrived, they were asked questions like “Where are you from?” After sitting down, another senior student arrived and made them stand for about three hours while asking numerous questions. 

During this time, they were forced to keep their head down and stand rigidly. The questioning was extremely harsh. One of the students collapsed during the ordeal and was immediately taken to the hospital.

Relative of Deceased Student Speaks Out

In a conversation with the deceased student’s relative, Dharmendrabhai Methania, he shared that Anil had joined Dharpur Medical College a month ago to pursue his first-year MBBS studies. He received a call from the college yesterday, informing him that Anil had collapsed due to dizziness and was admitted to the hospital. Upon reaching the hospital, the doctor informed them that the student had passed away. 

Anil’s body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and the truth will be revealed after the report. Dharmendrabhai mentioned hearing from other students at the college that Anil had been subjected to ragging by senior students. The continuous standing may have caused Anil to faint. He requested that the government and college provide justice for his family.

Dean of Dharpur Medical College Promises Disciplinary Action

In response to the incident, Hardik Shah, the Dean of Dharpur Medical College, stated that on the previous night, a student named Anil Methania fainted in the hostel and was rushed for treatment. Despite efforts by the college doctors, the student passed away. 

Upon questioning other students, it was revealed that senior students had made Anil stand for about three hours under the pretext of introducing him. The Dean assured that if ragging is found to be the cause during the investigation, the responsible parties will face disciplinary action.

PI States True Cause of Death Will Be Known After Post-Mortem Report

Balishna PI J. Solanki stated that the student was a first-year MBBS student, and during an introduction with seniors, he collapsed and tragically passed away. The police have currently registered an accidental death report and sent the body for post-mortem. The true cause of death will be determined once the post-mortem report is received.

Police Investigation Underway, Says DySP

DySP K.K. Pandya stated that today, Natvarbhai Raghvaji Patel approached the police and reported that his son, Anil, was a first-year MBBS student at Dharpur Medical College. The student collapsed and passed away due to dizziness during the night at the Dharpur Boys Hostel. 

After receiving the details of the incident, the Balisna Police Station registered an accidental death case under section 194 of the BNS Act. Following this, the deceased student underwent post-mortem with video documentation and a panel of doctors. The police investigation is ongoing, and detailed reports have been requested from the staff at Dharpur Hospital.
