“How Cute She Looks…”: Offensive Comments on Martyr Captain Anshuman’s Wife, Trolls Cross the Line, Immediate Action Ordered

On Friday, July 5, Captain Anshuman was posthumously honored with the Kirti Chakra at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The award was received by his wife, Smriti, and his mother, Manju. During the ceremony, Smriti shared her final moments with her husband, Anshuman, with the media, and the video of her account went viral on social media. 

Many social media users commented on Smriti’s video, with numerous positive remarks, but there were also some vulgar and offensive comments. The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken serious note of the online vulgar and offensive comments made against Captain Anshuman Singh’s wife.

National Commission for Women Demands Strict Action Against Online Offender

On Monday, the National Commission for Women (NCW) urged the Delhi Police not only to file a case against the accused but also to take strict action. The accused, who made vulgar comments, is a resident of Delhi. 

In a letter addressed to the Delhi Police, the NCW cited specific legal provisions, including Section 79 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 67 of the Information Technology (IT) Act, 2000.

Legal Provisions and Penalties Under IPC and IT Act Highlighted by NCW

The Indian Penal Code (IPC) provision aims to punish any act committed with the intent to insult a woman’s dignity. In contrast, the IT Act provision deals with penalties for publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form. 

In its letter, the NCW highlighted these laws, mentioning that first-time offenders can face up to three years of imprisonment and fines for such crimes.

NCW Urges Delhi Police to Act Within Three Days

The NCW has directed the Delhi Police to promptly file an FIR and arrest the accused immediately. The commission has also demanded an impartial and timely investigation by the police. 

Additionally, the NCW has asked for a report on the action taken to be submitted within three days.

Who Was Captain Anshuman?

Kirti Chakra awardee Captain Anshuman Singh was part of the Army Medical Corps in the 26th Battalion of the Punjab Regiment. He was stationed as a medical officer in Siachen during Operation Meghdoot. On July 19, 2023, a devastating fire broke out in the Chandan Dropping Zone of Siachen. 

Captain Anshuman assisted in rescuing people trapped in the fire. Despite the fire spreading to the Medical Investigation Center, Captain Anshuman selflessly jumped into the blaze to help others, without regard for his own safety.

On the night of July 19, 2023, around 3:30 AM, a fire broke out in an ammunition bunker of the Indian Army in the Siachen Glacier. The fire engulfed several tents, trapping Indian soldiers inside. Captain Anshuman was stationed there at the time. Demonstrating immense bravery, he saved the lives of his fellow soldiers. 

Captain Anshuman entered the blazing bunker and safely rescued four of his comrades. However, he suffered severe burns in the process. All the injured soldiers were airlifted to Chandigarh for treatment, where Captain Anshuman Singh succumbed to his injuries and attained martyrdom.

Anshuman-Smriti got married in February 2023. Within five months Anshuman was martyred.

Captain Anshuman’s Journey and Family Background

After completing his studies, Anshuman qualified for the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) in Pune. Following his MBBS degree from AFMC, Captain Anshuman Singh joined the Army Medical Corps. His wife, Smriti, is an engineer by profession, and her parents are school principals. After receiving training at the Agra Military Hospital, Anshuman was stationed there.

Anshuman’s father, Ravi Pratap Singh, served as a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) in the army. Besides his mother, Manju Singh, Captain Anshuman Singh’s family includes his brother, Ghanshyam Singh, and sister, Tanya Singh, both of whom are doctors in Noida.
