Heartbreaking Mumbai Boat Accident: Navy Speedboat Stunt, Sinking Boat, and Eyewitness Account of People Without Life Jackets
New details have emerged regarding the boat accident that occurred in Mumbai on Wednesday. A passenger aboard the boat traveling from Gateway of India to Elephanta shared their experience:
“Around 100 people were on the boat, and none of us were wearing life jackets. Suddenly, a Navy speedboat collided with our boat, causing it to start sinking. We tried to rescue several people from the water. After about 25 minutes, the Navy rescued us.”
Another eyewitness also captured a video of the incident. They mentioned, “Before the collision, the Navy speedboat was performing stunts, which is why I recorded it.”
Mumbai Police Reports Casualties in Boat Accident, New Video Emerges
Mumbai police have reported that the accident resulted in the deaths of four Navy personnel and nine civilians aboard the boat. The Neelkamal boat, which has a capacity of 80 people, was carrying over 100 passengers, including 20 children. The police have filed a case against the driver of the Navy boat that caused the collision.
On Thursday, another video of the incident surfaced, showing Navy personnel rescuing people who were drowning in the sea. The victims included women and children. The video captures the sounds of screams and commotion as the Navy personnel work to save them.
Rescue Efforts Focus on Saving Women and Children, Witnesses Share Their Experience
The individuals involved in the rescue operation stated that they prioritized saving women and children first, as many people were crying for help.
The driver of the tourist boat mentioned, “We were the first to reach the scene. The people on the overturned boat were screaming for help. We rescued 16 people and brought them safely to Gateway of India. I’ve never witnessed such an incident in my life.”
Arif Bamne from the Mumbai Port Trust, who was also involved in the rescue efforts, shared, “When we arrived to assist, we saw people crying out for help. We immediately focused on rescuing women and children. Among those shouting for help, there were three to four foreigners. We managed to save about 20-25 people. One little girl was unconscious, and water had entered her lungs. We applied pressure on her chest, and then she started breathing again.”
Navy Claims Captain Lost Control of Speedboat During Engine Trial
The Navy stated that the speedboat involved in the incident was undergoing an engine trial. According to the Navy, the captain lost control of the boat, which then collided with the Neelkamal boat. Navy Deploys 11 Boats and 4 Helicopters for Rescue Operations
According to reports, the Navy, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), Coast Guard, Yelogate Police Station 3, and local fishing boats all contributed to the rescue and relief efforts.
A total of 11 Navy boats, 3 Marine Police boats, and 1 Coast Guard boat participated in the operation. Additionally, 4 helicopters were involved in the rescue efforts. The passengers were safely transported back to Gateway of India, from where they were taken to various hospitals for treatment.
