Rescue and relief efforts have been initiated 48 hours after the earthquake. The death toll may increase further. Thousands of injured individuals have been admitted to hospitals. Many homes have been rendered uninhabitable due to the collapse of several buildings. According to media reports, a national mourning period of 3 days has been declared in Morocco.
Royal Intervention and Deployment of Special Search and Rescue Teams
According to a statement by the Moroccan military, King Mohammed VI has directed special search and rescue teams and surgical field hospitals to be deployed. These teams are tasked with searching for survivors and providing aid in the affected regions. In the meantime, the clean-up and recovery efforts are in full swing. The earthquake’s epicenter was approximately 18.5 kilometers deep.
Impact Across Southern Morocco, From Sidi Ifni to Rabat
The earthquake was felt strongly across southern Morocco, from Sidi Ifni in the south to Rabat and its outskirts in the north. The epicenter was located 72 kilometers west of Marrakech, a major economic hub. Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) has stated that if an emergency alert is received from Morocco, they are ready to dispatch 265 members of medical, rescue, search, and relief agencies.
