A Clash with Canada’s PM Justin Trudeau
In 2017, Matthew Perry claimed on Jimmy Kimmel’s show that he had beaten up Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau when they attended the same elementary school. Matthew said he went to school with Trudeau, and they crossed paths when he was at a field trip. He then claimed that he had beaten up the future Prime Minister of Canada.
However, he later clarified that it was meant as a joke. Perry tweeted on April 1st that he doesn’t remember the incident. In response, Perry tweeted, “I’m not bragging about it, I’m just explaining that I think he was the only person I have a semi-vivid memory of,” insinuating that the claim might not be true.
Matthew Perry and Justin Trudeau attended the same school, and their mothers both worked there. Justin Trudeau’s father, Pierre Trudeau, was the Prime Minister of Canada at that time, and Matthew Perry’s mother, Suzanne Morrison, was the press secretary for Pierre Trudeau.
Perry’s Struggle with Addiction
Matthew Perry faced a long battle with addiction throughout his life. His addiction struggles grew alongside the success of his friends, and he couldn’t even remember some of the shooting of Friends due to his addiction. He had talked about it often.
In 2022, he wrote in his biography, “Friends, Lovers, and The Big Terrible Thing,” that he had been under the influence of drugs and alcohol for so many years that he had a 2% chance of surviving his colon rupture in 2008. He mentioned that he thought if he were to die, it might be a wake-up call for someone else. He hoped that people would relate to his story and realize that this disease can affect anyone.
He also stated in his autobiography that he was afraid to live because he was scared of sobriety, as he had tied his existence to his addiction for so long. In his own words, he said, “I’ve thought if I die, nobody will be sober.” His struggle was significant and well-documented.
