Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Manohar Joshi Passes Away at 86: Last Breath Taken at 86; Two Days in ICU Post Heart Attack
Former Chief Minister of Maharashtra and prominent Shiv Sena leader, Manohar Joshi, passed away at the age of 86 due to a heart attack. He breathed his last on Friday morning at PD Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai. Joshi had suffered a heart attack on Wednesday and had been admitted to the ICU since then. His last rites will be conducted today at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park crematorium.
Manohar Joshi served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 1995 to 1999. He was a key figure in the Shiv Sena (then undivided) before becoming the state’s CM. Joshi also served as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 2002 to 2004 during the Vajpayee government. Additionally, he was a Rajya Sabha member from 2006 to 2012. Joshi’s passing marks the end of an era, leaving behind a significant legacy in Maharashtra’s political landscape.
From Educator to Politician: The Journey of Manohar Joshi
Born on December 2, 1937, in Nandvi, Maharashtra, Manohar Joshi initially pursued his education in Mumbai before embarking on a career in teaching. His foray into politics began in 1967, and for over four decades, Joshi remained closely associated with the Shiv Sena.
During the late 1960s, Joshi served as a Municipal Councilor in Mumbai and later became the Chairman of the Standing Committee (Municipal Corporation) in 1970. He held the prestigious position of Mumbai’s Mayor in 1976-77. In 1972, he was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Council.
After three terms in the Legislative Council, Joshi was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in 1990. During the 1990-91 session, he served as an opposition leader in the assembly. In 1999, he contested and won the Lok Sabha elections on Shiv Sena’s ticket from the Mumbai North-Central constituency.

Manohar Joshi’s Wife Passed Away in 2020
In May 14, 1964, Manohar Joshi tied the knot with Anagha Joshi. The couple was blessed with a son named Unmesh and two daughters, Asmita and Namrata. Anagha Joshi passed away at the age of 75 in 2020. Joshi’s granddaughter, Sharvari Wagh (Namrata’s daughter), is a Bollywood actress.
