Additionally, it is concerning for Indians who dream of going to Canada for studies or job opportunities, as most of the people standing in line for waiter and server positions are Indian.

‘Tandoori Flame’ Restaurant in Brampton Hiring Waiters and Servers

The ‘Tandoori Flame’ restaurant located in Brampton, Canada, has started hiring for waiter and server positions. Indeep Kaur, the executive manager of the restaurant, stated in a media interview that they expect around 3,000 candidates to show up for interviews within two days, as there was a large crowd and long lines on the first day as well. Most of the people coming for the interviews are Indian.

Canada Reduces Permits for International Students by 35%

Canada has long been a favorite destination for Indians, as obtaining work permits, permanent residency, and subsequently citizenship through student visas has become quite easy. 

However, Indian students need to reconsider their plans before moving to Canada, as the country has recently decided to reduce visas for international students by 35%, with a further potential reduction of up to 10% in the coming year.

In announcing this, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that if “bad actors” misuse immigration policies and take advantage of students, Canada will take strict action against them. 

He mentioned that they will tighten regulations for foreign workers to reduce the number of temporary residents in Canada. In a post on the social media platform X, Trudeau said, “Our government will provide 35% fewer permits to international students this year. There will be an additional 10% reduction in this number by 2025.”

Canada Plans to Issue 437,000 Study Permits in 2025, 10% Decrease from 2024

According to the Trudeau government, Canada plans to issue 437,000 study permits in 2025, which is a 10% decrease from the 485,000 permits to be issued in 2024. Last year (2023), a total of 509,390 foreign students were granted study visas

In the first seven months of this year (2024), 175,920 student visas have already been approved. In 2023, Canada issued study visas to 226,000 Indian students. At that time, 320,000 Indians were residing in Canada on student visas, contributing to the economy as gig workers.
