Party’s Call for New Leadership

The MPs have urged Trudeau not to run for a fourth term, noting that no Canadian leader has won four consecutive terms in over a century. This challenge comes at a time when Trudeau’s government is embroiled in a diplomatic standoff with India over the assassination of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

MPs Draw Parallels with Biden’s Strategy

In a closed-door meeting with 20 MPs, British Columbia MP Patrick Wheeler emphasized the importance of Trudeau stepping down, likening the situation to U.S. President Joe Biden, who withdrew from the race to strengthen the Democratic Party’s chances. Wheeler argued that the Liberal Party in Canada could similarly benefit from new leadership ahead of the election.

Mounting Internal Pressure

Newfoundland MP Ken McDonald stressed that Trudeau needs to listen to the concerns of party members. Many MPs are reportedly anxious about their prospects in the upcoming election, as the Liberal Party’s popularity wanes. Currently, the party holds 153 seats in the House of Commons.

Liberal Party Struggles Without Majority

Earlier this month, Trudeau lost the support of his coalition partner, the New Democratic Party (NDP), led by pro-Khalistani Canadian Sikh MP Jagmeet Singh. Since then, the Prime Minister has been governing without a parliamentary majority.
