IIT Guwahati Hostel Incident: Police Suspect Suicide, Father Alleges Murder Over Ragging

A student of IIT Guwahati has been found dead in his hostel room. The police suspect suicide. The family has accused ragging as the cause of death. The deceased hailed from Mohanpur village in Samastipur district of Bihar. Saurabh, a 20-year-old student of B.Tech Computer Science, was in his first year.

The police stated that the incident occurred around half-past five on Wednesday evening. The roommate of the deceased had gone to attend class. At that time, the victim was alone in the room. Shortly after, his roommate and the security guard were informed. The body has been sent for a postmortem examination. Suicide is suspected. Things will become clear after the postmortem report arrives.

The father of the deceased has lodged a complaint against the institution for not taking action against bullying which led to his son’s death. He stated that it is clearly a case of murder, but the IIT administration is attempting to cover it up as suicide. There have been several instances of ragging within the institution. He had also filed complaints about this, but the institution paid no attention.

The institution has not responded to the allegations. Although they have expressed grief over the student’s death and assured full support to the family.
