34 State Highways, 1 National Highway Closed in Gujarat; 30 Trains & 433 Bus Routes Canceled

Heavy rainfall in Gujarat has significantly impacted travel across the state. With waterlogging in various areas, 22 state highways have been closed, and three train services have been affected. The Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) has canceled 433 bus routes and 2,081 trips, with the most cancellations in Panchmahal, Dahod, Mahisagar, Anand, Kheda, Surat, and Valsad districts. In total, 636 roads, including 1 national highway, 34 state highways, 44 other roads, and 557 panchayat roads, are closed.

Out of 14,512 routes, 64 routes, and out of 40,515 trips, 583 trips have been canceled. The details for specific districts are as follows:

  • Anand: 6 routes, 12 trips

These routes and trips will resume normal operations once the water recedes and roads are safe for transportation.

Heavy Rainfall Disrupts Railway Traffic

Due to heavy to very heavy rainfall in the state, railway traffic has also been disrupted. Waterlogging on the railway tracks around Bajwa Railway Station in the Vadodara division has led to the cancellation of approximately 30 trains between Ahmedabad and Mumbai. Another 36 trains are now rerouted via Anand and Godhra after Vadodara. Thirteen other trains have been operated up to different stations. The railway traffic between Ahmedabad, Anand, Vadodara, and Mumbai is also experiencing delays due to the heavy rains.

Heavy Rainfall Impacting Gujarat

Since yesterday, heavy rainfall has been affecting Gujarat, causing disruption in bus and train services across the state. Flights have also been impacted due to the weather, with aircraft requiring clearance from air traffic control, resulting in some flights circling in the air before landing. A total of 71 outbound flights from Ahmedabad were delayed, while 42 incoming flights from other sectors were also delayed.

Obtaining clearance from air traffic control for takeoff and landing is crucial. With a red alert issued due to the heavy rainfall forecast in Ahmedabad, 21 flights circling in the air before landing at Ahmedabad airport today. Some flights circled for half an hour, while others circled for longer periods before successfully landing. Various airlines’ flights taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport were delayed by 1 to 4 hours.

Details Announced by Relief Commissioner Alok Pandey

Today, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel held a dialogue with district collectors and commissioners to get details of the current situation and also conducted a high-level meeting with all department secretaries. Collectors have been instructed to cancel the leave of all district administrative and allied department officers. Currently, a depression has formed, leading to three more days of rain. The state has received 89% of its average rainfall. In the last 24 hours, 63 mm of rain has been recorded. Some districts in the state are on red alert. Due to heavy rainfall, 10 state highways are currently closed. Police and district collector systems are working to inform and evacuate citizens. In the last 24 hours, three deaths have occurred in Dahod and Gandhinagar due to the rain. Additionally, 200 citizens have been relocated in the past 24 hours. The government emphasizes the importance of preventing human casualties. Chief Minister has instructed the authorities to act strictly if necessary to prevent loss of human life. It is essential to take such precautions before the situation worsens.

Avoid Spreading Rumors, Stay Calm, and Don’t Panic

Chief Minister’s High-Level Meeting in Gandhinagar

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel convened a high-level meeting in Gandhinagar to assess the situation caused by heavy rainfall in the state. On Monday afternoon, the Chief Minister visited the State Emergency Operation Center and held a video conference with collectors, municipal commissioners, and district officials from rain-affected areas to obtain detailed information. He specifically emphasized the need for safe evacuation of people from low-lying areas and made it clear that the top priority should be preventing loss of human and animal lives. He instructed collectors to ensure strict precautions and use police assistance if necessary to prevent people from crossing or entering floodwater. He also prioritized rescuing people trapped in the water. To this end, he reviewed details of rescue and evacuation operations with NDRF, SDRF, and local police. So far, 17,827 people have been evacuated and 1,653 people have been rescued. NDRF has 13 teams and SDRF has 22 teams deployed in affected districts, assisting with rescue and relief operations.

In the last 24 hours, 33 districts out of 244 talukas in the state have received rainfall. The average rainfall during this period was 63.36 mm. The highest rainfall of 356 mm was recorded in Khergam, Navsari. On August 26, from 6 am to 12 pm, Morwa Hadf in Panchmahal received the highest rainfall of 157 mm. This year, the state has received 91.88% of the average monsoon rainfall. The Chief Minister also reviewed the impact on water levels in rivers and reservoirs. Of the 206 reservoirs in the state, 59 are 100% full, 72 are on high alert, 22 are on alert, 9 are overflowing, and 7 rivers are overflown. The Sardar Sarovar Dam has 88.74% of its total storage capacity, which amounts to 2,96,459 MCFT.

The Chief Minister instructed relevant officials and senior officers to work with urgency to restore power supply, roads, and essential services affected by the rainfall. The power supply has been affected in 7,009 villages, with 6,977 villages having their power supply restored. Additionally, 5,961 of the 6,090 damaged electric poles have been repaired. The Chief Minister also instructed to take preemptive measures for disease prevention once the rain stops, including spraying disinfectants, cleaning up mud and debris, and repairing roads. Currently, 523 roads are closed across the state in Surat, Navsari, Valsad, Tapi, Dangs, and Chhota Udepur districts.

The Chief Minister also reviewed the weather department’s forecast for future heavy rainfall and red alerts. The weather department has predicted extensive and heavy rainfall over the next two to three days and issued a red alert. In response, the Chief Minister has advised collectors in Kutch and Saurashtra to stay alert. He held discussions with collectors of affected districts, including Navsari, Valsad, Dangs, Panchmahal, Vadodara, and Chhota Udepur, and reviewed the situation regarding river water levels, traffic management, and evacuations. The Chief Minister instructed district officials to be fully prepared and adopt a zero-casualty approach.
