Only 2% Secure Government Jobs: In Gujarat, Just 2 Out of 100 Candidates Pass Exams
In Gujarat, over the past five years, 10.5 million candidates applied for government jobs. However, only 44.36%, which is 4.698 million candidates, attended the exams. During this period, the government earned more than 200 million from candidate application fees. According to RTI responses from the Gujarat Public Service Commission (GPSC), Gujarat Subordinate Service Selection Board (GSSSB), and Police Recruitment Board (PRB), the revenue from application fees was 191.9 million. Information on revenue from the Gujarat Panchayat Service Selection Board (GPSSB) was not available. Only 2 out of every 100 candidates who appear for government job exams succeed. Success rates depend on the location and the number of present candidates. The success rates for direct recruitment by GPSC and technical recruitment by the subordinate service board are not included. From 2017-18 to 2021-22 and 2023-24, competitive exams were held for over 34,000 positions. Many candidates apply for multiple exams.

In exams with increasing numbers of forms, the lowest attendance was recorded in April 2023 for the Talati exam, where 17.10 million forms were filled for 3,437 positions, but only 5.72 million candidates attended. Recently, for 5,554 positions in Group A-B of the subordinate service, 519,000 applications were received, with 356,000 candidates attending. For the non-secretariat clerk positions, out of 1.045 million forms, only 400,000 appeared for the exam. For junior clerk positions, 953,000 forms were filled, but only 391,000 candidates attended.
Success rates in Class 1-2 and Dy. SO recruitment exams have been low. Between 2017-18 and 2021-22, GPSC conducted recruitment for 1,141 positions in the Gujarat Administrative Service (GAS) and the State Service (Class 1-2) five times. Of the 11.79 million candidates who applied, 6.22 million attended, resulting in a success rate of only 0.18%. In the DYSO and Nayab Mamlatdar exams, for 830 positions, 5.30 million out of 9.26 million candidates appeared, with a success rate of 0.15%.
