Girnar Climbing and Descending Competition: 1,200+ Competitors Brave Early Morning Cold, First Place Wins ₹50,000 Prize

The Girnar Hill Station, considered one of Gujarat’s prominent destinations, is hosting the 39th State-Level Girnar Climbing Competition today. Competitors from across the state have registered to take part in this prestigious event. 

Over 1,200 participants, braving the biting cold early in the morning, raced to complete the climb—brothers tackling 5,500 steps, while sisters aimed to conquer 2,200 steps.

The Girnar Climbing and Descending Competition is held annually at Bhavnath, attracting a large number of young brothers and sisters from across the state. They enthusiastically race towards the Girnar Hill’s Ambaji Temple, which is a challenging destination. 

The tradition of holding the state-level Girnar Climbing and Descending competition on the first Sunday of January has been followed for years, and today’s event marked the 39th edition. Participants from across the state took part with great enthusiasm, as the competition began early in the morning at 6:00 AM.

“I am here to climb the 2200 steps with mental determination” – Participant

Shilpaben Vaghela, a participant from Rohisa village in Amreli district’s Jafrabad taluka, shared her experience ahead of the Girnar Climbing and Descending competition. “I am an athletics player and have been practicing athletics for the past four years. 

Today, I am here to participate in the Girnar Climbing and Descending competition and climb 2,200 steps. It is very challenging to climb 2,200 steps in this biting cold, but with mental determination, I have come here to conquer them,” she said.

N.D. Vala, the Youth Development Officer of Junagadh District, shared that today the 39th All-Girnar Climbing and Descending Competition was organized by the Gujarat Government’s Sports and Culture Department in Gandhinagar, along with the district administration of Junagadh. “A large number of brothers and sisters from across Gujarat have come to participate in this competition. 

The event has been organized in four different categories. For the brothers, the challenge involves climbing 5,500 steps to reach the Ambaji Temple, while the sisters will climb 2,200 steps to reach Mali Parab,” he said.

Prize Distribution and Eligibility for National Competition

It was further mentioned that around 1,200 competitors participated in today’s Girnar Climbing and Descending Competition. The winners will receive a total prize pool of ₹8,40,000, with ₹50,000 awarded to the first-place winner and prizes for the top 1 to 10 positions in different categories. 

Additionally, the top 25 participants from today’s competition will have the opportunity to compete in the National Climbing Competition, scheduled for February 2nd.
