Stone Pelting on Ganesh Visarjan in Mandya: Swords and Glass Bottles Used, Mob Sets Fire to Shops and Vehicles; 15 Police Injured

On Wednesday night, a stone-pelting incident occurred during the Ganpati Visarjan procession in Nagamangala, Mandya, Karnataka. The incident took place at 8 PM when the procession reached near the Dargah on Mysore Road. Some individuals initiated the stone-pelting, leading to protests by the Hindu community.

Several shops in the area and vehicles parked nearby were set on fire. The police resorted to baton charges to disperse the crowd.

According to Kannada news channels, eyewitnesses reported that apart from stones, the procession was also attacked with swords, sticks, and bottles. In this violent incident, 15 police officers were injured.

People involved in the yatra also pelted stones at the stone pelters. After which the police lathi-charged.

Attack with Swords and Juice Bottles, 15 Police Officers Injured

According to Kannada news channels, eyewitnesses reported that apart from stone-pelting, the procession was also attacked with swords, pipes, and juice bottles. As a result, 15 police officers were injured and have been admitted to the hospital for treatment.

A large number of police have been deployed in the area after the stone pelting. Gathering of more than 5 people is currently prohibited.

52 People Arrested, Section 144 Imposed

The Hindu community halted the Ganesh idol in front of the police station, demanding action against the accused. A similar incident occurred last year in Badrikoppal on Mysore Road, opposite the same Dargah.

An angry mob surrounded the police station over the incident of stone pelting at the Ganesh Puja pandal in Lucknow.

In response to the situation, Section 144 (formerly referred to as Section 163 in BNS) of the CrPC has been imposed in the area for three days. Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad have announced a bandh (strike) on Thursday in protest of the incident.

Following the events, the police arrested 52 people from both sides and took them to the police station for interrogation. The district collector also declared a holiday for schools and colleges in Nagamangala today.
