7 Family Members Die by Suicide in Car Due to Debt Pressure After Attending Religious Event

In a heart-wrenching incident in Panchkula, Haryana, seven members of a family died by suicide inside a parked car late Monday night. The family reportedly consumed poison due to mounting debts. The victims had returned from attending a religious discourse by Dhirendra Shastri of Bageshwar Dham earlier that day.

The family originally hailed from Dehradun, Uttarakhand. The deceased include Praveen Mittal, his wife, his elderly parents, and their three children. Praveen had recently started a tour and travel business in Dehradun, which failed, leading to severe financial distress.

When people reached the car, Praveen Mittal was alive inside. He was then taken out.

One Member Found Alive, Later Declared Dead at Hospital

Local resident Harsh, who lives in Sector 27, recounted the events. Around 10:30 PM, his landlord noticed a Hyundai Aura parked outside their home. When Harsh approached the car, he saw multiple people inside—some unconscious. He immediately called others for help. One person, later identified as Praveen Mittal, was still alive but shivering and vomiting.

Harsh said that they tried giving him water while calling emergency services. Praveen was taken to the hospital by police, where doctors declared him dead.

Inside the Car: A Disturbing Scene

Harsh described the distressing scene inside the car:

  • Praveen’s elderly mother was on the front passenger seat.
  • One of his sons was lying lifeless near her feet.
  • Praveen’s wife, father, and two daughters were on the backseat.

Harsh attempted to speak with Praveen, who admitted they had taken poison due to overwhelming debt and could no longer continue living.

Praveen Mittal was taken to the hospital in a police vehicle.

Police Recover 2-Page Suicide Note from Car

During the investigation, police recovered a two-page suicide note from the vehicle. The note stated:

“I am deeply in debt. All this happened because of me. Please do not blame my in-laws. My maternal uncle’s son will take care of all final rites and rituals.”

Police confirmed that the note is now part of their investigation.

The family members had consumed poison in this same car. DCP Himadri Kaushik reached the spot as soon as the information was received.

Business Failure and Financial Struggles Led to Tragedy

According to sources, Praveen had launched a tour and travel business in Dehradun which didn’t succeed. As debts piled up, the family began to struggle with even basic household expenses. The immense financial pressure ultimately led to this devastating decision.

The three children, aged between 10 and 15, were students at Model School in Sector 28-D, Chandigarh.

All Victims Identified, Family Notified

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Himadri Kaushik arrived at the scene with other senior officers. She confirmed the deaths and stated that all victims have been identified. The family’s relatives have been informed and a full investigation is underway.
