“Please… Take Care of Us”: Cyclists Hold Rally in Ahmedabad for Driver Awareness After Accident, Injured Doctor Joins the Rally

On November 23, two cyclists were injured in an accident involving an unidentified vehicle on a flyover near the Gujarat High Court in Ahmedabad. To prevent such incidents from recurring, 200 cyclists from seven different cycling groups in Ahmedabad participated in an awareness rally this morning.

They cycled for 25 kilometers to raise awareness among the public. Notably, the two cyclists injured in the accident also joined the rally, appealing to drivers to be more mindful of cyclists on the road. According to reports, the driver involved in the November 23 hit-and-run accident has been apprehended by the police.

Awareness Rally Organized to Promote Road Safety After Cyclist Accident

Recently, a car hit early-morning cyclists, including a doctor, on a flyover near the Gujarat High Court in Ahmedabad. In response, various cycling groups organized an awareness rally to promote road safety among drivers.

The rally began at 6:30 AM from Gotila Garden, covering a route of over 25 kilometers. Cyclists traveled to Vaishnodevi Circle, took a U-turn, and concluded the ride near Pakwan Crossroads. More than 200 cyclists from different groups participated, using banners and slogans to spread awareness and encourage drivers to be more cautious and respectful towards cyclists on the road.

Seven Cycling Groups Participate in Awareness Rally

Seven major cycling groups from Ahmedabad participated in the rally, including Pedalers, Friends Cycling Club, Green Riders, Bycs Ahmedabad, 079 Riders, Cyclone Cycling Club, and Road Soldiers Group. All participants wore safety gear, and cyclists ensured their bikes were equipped with front and rear lights, while riders wore helmets.

The primary objective of the rally was to advocate for better facilities for cycling, strict enforcement of road safety regulations, and to raise awareness about providing designated lanes for cyclists on the roads.

Injured Cyclists from November 23 Accident Join Awareness Rally

It is noteworthy that the two cyclists who were injured in the accident near the flyover at Gujarat High Court on November 23 are members of the Pedalers group. Krishna Shukla and Dr. Anish Tiwari, both of whom were part of the accident, also joined the rally.

Due to a female cyclist being injured, she was accompanied by other cyclists in a vehicle. She suffered a fracture and is expected to rest for six weeks. On the other hand, Dr. Tiwari continued to ride his bicycle during the rally.

What Did the Cyclists Say?

Krishna Shukla, one of the cyclists who was injured in the November 23 accident, said, “We, as cyclists, are also on the road. People driving cars should be more mindful of cyclists. I suffered a fracture and need to rest for six weeks.”

Dr. Anish Tiwari, who was also injured in the accident, shared his experience: “We started cycling at 6 AM on November 23. While we were on the Sola Bridge, I was hit and thrown about 12 feet away. My fellow riders also fell to the ground. Other riders quickly called 108 and took us to the hospital.”

25 Cyclists Killed in Hit-and-Run Accidents in Gujarat in 2023

In Gujarat, 25 cyclists lost their lives in hit-and-run incidents caused by reckless drivers in 2023. Across India, reckless driving has led to the deaths of 3,500 cyclists, with 6,500 others suffering serious injuries. 

Today, cyclists are planning to present their concerns to government authorities, demanding the allocation of separate routes for cyclists to ensure their safety on the roads.
