Surat Metro Construction Accidents on the Rise Due to Contractor Negligence

Metro construction is ongoing in Surat, but accidents are increasing due to contractor negligence. Last Thursday, while work was underway to place a girder launcher on the elevated bridge of the metro project in the Tapovan School area of Small Varachha Chikuwadi, two cranes, including a 135-ton girder box, collapsed onto a building, causing significant damage.

Following this incident, there has been considerable outrage among Surat residents against the metro construction work. In response, the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation has formed a five-member committee and initiated an investigation. The committee is gathering information on-site regarding the crane’s capacity and other machinery involved.

Since the incident last Thursday, the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation has issued a notice to the contractor, Ranjit Buildcon, demanding an explanation within three days.

Preliminary Findings Indicate Contractor Negligence

Initial findings suggest that the accident was due to contractor negligence. As of now, the debris from the broken crane and box has not been removed. Metro officials have stated that all spare parts of the crane will be dismantled and removed.

Prashant Kulkarni, Executive Director of Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation, has stated that the investigation by the committee is ongoing. Ranjit Buildcon has been issued a notice to provide a response within three days. The statement also mentioned that if the company is found at fault, action will be taken as per the agreement.
