Continuous Rainfall in Central Gujarat: 3 Inches in 2 Hours in Virpur and 8 Inches in 10 Hours in Vadodara

The monsoon has fully settled in the state, having caused destruction in Saurashtra and South Gujarat initially, and is now favoring Central Gujarat. For a long time, Central Gujarat has been experiencing only sporadic rain showers, leading to unbearable heat and humidity that had left people frustrated. 

However, in the past 24 hours, torrential rains have caused widespread flooding in Central Gujarat. Borasad in Central Gujarat received the highest rainfall, with nearly 13 inches (354 mm) of rain. In the last two hours alone, from 4 to 6, Virpur in Mahisagar recorded 3 inches (75 mm) of rain.

Rainfall Statistics: A Closer Look at Government Records

According to official rainfall records, from 6 AM to 6 PM today (July 24), 222 talukas have experienced rainfall. The heaviest rainfall was recorded in Borasad, Anand, with 353 mm, followed by Tilakwada in Narmada with 213 mm, Padra in Baroda with 199 mm, Vadodara city with 198 mm, Bharuch with 185 mm, Nasvadi in Chhota Udepur with 156 mm, Nandod in Narmada with 143 mm, Jhagadia in Bharuch with 135 mm, Shinor in Vadodara with 134 mm, Hansot in Bharuch with 130 mm, Sankheda in Chhota Udepur with 115 mm, Mahuva in Surat and Vagara in Bharuch with 113 mm, Dabhoi in Vadodara and Mangrol in Surat with 107 mm, Karjan in Vadodara with 105 mm, Halol in Panchmahal with 104 mm, Khambhat in Anand with 102 mm, and Palsana in Surat and Wadiya in Bharuch with 101 mm of rainfall.

Rainfall Distribution: Areas with Minimal Rainfall

While over 200 talukas recorded less than 100 mm of rainfall, the lowest amounts were observed in Viramgam (Ahmedabad), Lakhpat, Rapar, Bhachau (Kutch), Dhrangadhra, Dasada (Suren­dranagar), and Dahod, each receiving just 1 mm of rain.

Evening Rainfall Summary: Key Figures

Between 4 PM and 6 PM, 131 talukas recorded rainfall. Notable amounts include 75 mm in Virpur (Mahisagar), 72 mm in Dahegam (Gandhinagar), 58 mm in Kapadvanj (Kheda), and 53 mm in Palsana (Surat). The remaining 129 talukas experienced less than 50 mm of rainfall.

Schools Closed in Vadodara and Bharuch Due to Heavy Rain

Due to severe rainfall, the District Education Office in Vadodara has declared a holiday for schools because of flooding in the city. In Bharuch, the District Collector announced via social media that, in response to the weather department’s alert and for safety reasons, schools, colleges, and anganwadis in all talukas except Amod, Jambusar, and Vagara will remain closed on July 24, 2024 (Wednesday). Online education will continue as an alternative.

Weather Forecast for July 25-26

The weather department has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall across the state for the next two days. On July 25-26, the rainfall intensity will be moderate, with significant downpours expected in three districts of Saurashtra and four districts of South Gujarat.

  • Orange Alert: Amreli, Bhavnagar, and Valsad districts.
  • Yellow Alert: Gir Somnath, Surat, Navsari, and Dangs districts.

In the southern parts of Gujarat, rainfall is expected to be less intense on July 26 compared to previous days.

Highest Rainfall in the Saurashtra Region This Season

So far this season, the state has received 44.29% of its expected rainfall. The Saurashtra region has experienced the highest rainfall, with 66.13% of the season’s average, followed by the Kutch region with 58.40%.

In South Gujarat, approximately 50% of the season’s rainfall has been recorded. Central Gujarat has seen 24.90%, while North Gujarat has received 24% of its seasonal average rainfall.
