Car Manufacturers Face Emission Norms Compliance Scrutiny: Hyundai, Kia, Renault Under Potential Action
The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) in India has implemented strict penalties for car manufacturers that do not adhere to emission standards properly. The car manufacturers have been directed to take immediate measures to address these issues. In particular, BEE has introduced stringent emission standards and is encouraging the development of vehicles that emit less pollution and utilize green energy.
Many cities, including Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Punjab, Haryana, and others, have been struggling with dangerously high pollution levels. The Air Quality Index (AQI) has reached record levels in these regions.
The Supreme Court has also taken a serious stance on pollution and has advised both the state and central governments to take immediate action to reduce it, which includes imposing penalties.
Companies producing vehicles that have high carbon emissions will face heavy fines. As per the Energy Conservation Amendment 2022, any company manufacturing cars that exceed the emission standards will be penalized. Additionally, the corporate fuel economy norms are set to be implemented in the country this year, aiming to reduce vehicular emissions significantly.
The fines for vehicle manufacturers can be substantial. For each unit that exceeds the emission limits, a fine of INR 25,000 is imposed. Furthermore, vehicles emitting more than 4.7 grams of pollutants per kilometer will face a penalty of INR 50,000 for each vehicle.
For instance, Honda Cars could face a fine of INR 103 crores due to its emission exceeding the prescribed limits. Honda’s emission level surpasses the standards by 17 units.
Renault may face a fine of INR 75 crores, Nissan INR 41 crores, Skoda INR 59 crores, and Force Motors INR 0.7 crores for exceeding the emission standards.
These measures are aimed at reducing pollution and encouraging automakers to produce vehicles that are more environmentally friendly and energy-efficient.
