Canada Updates Post-Graduation Work Permit Rules for Students Effective November 1
Canada Introduces Updated PGWP Rules Effective November 1
Starting November 1, Canada has implemented new guidelines for its Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) program, affecting international students who plan to work after completing their studies. This change, overseen by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), aims to better align with labor market needs while maintaining some previous eligibility standards. Here’s a detailed look at the revised PGWP requirements.
Language Proficiency Now Emphasized
Under the updated rules, PGWP applicants must demonstrate a strong command of the language relevant to their field. Applicants are required to present a language proficiency certification dated within the last two years. Accepted tests for English include CELPIP, IELTS, and PTE, while French speakers can provide TEF Canada, TCF Canada, or NCLC scores. This adjustment is intended to ensure that international graduates have the communication skills necessary for effective employment in Canada.
Course-Specific Eligibility Requirements
Where previously a broad range of courses were eligible for the PGWP, new rules prioritize fields with labor shortages. Applicants who study in fields like Agriculture, Healthcare, Technology, Engineering, Math, Trades, and Transport are more likely to be granted a PGWP, addressing specific employment gaps in these sectors. This targeted approach aims to equip industries with skilled professionals ready to meet demand.
Changes in Application Process and Medical Exam Requirement
The IRCC has also modified the application process, requiring all PGWP applications to be submitted online rather than at entry points. Additionally, a medical examination is mandatory for certain fields, with applicants having the option to complete the exam up to 90 days before applying for the PGWP.
Guidelines for Student Status and Visa Expiry
To apply for the PGWP, students must maintain an active study permit status. If a student’s visa expires before obtaining the PGWP, they are allowed a 90-day grace period to submit their application and required fees, provided they meet all criteria.
What Hasn’t Changed in PGWP Eligibility?
Despite these updates, several core requirements remain the same. Students still need to attend a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) to qualify for a PGWP, ensuring they receive a recognized standard of education. Physical presence in Canada remains a requirement for eligibility.
For international students planning to study in Canada, it’s crucial to understand these updated PGWP regulations and how they could impact future work opportunities.
