In a significant political development, Baryl Vanneihsangi, a 32-year-old radio jockey with a substantial Instagram following, has secured victory in Mizoram’s recent state election. Running under the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) banner, Vanneihsangi clinched the Aizawl South-III constituency by a margin of 1,414 votes.

His triumph not only establishes him as the youngest Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in Mizoram but also highlights the growing influence of emerging leaders with a social media presence. Vanneihsangi’s popularity on Instagram likely played a role in reaching and resonating with a diverse voter base.

The ZPM, Mizoram’s newest political party, made a sweeping impact in the elections, securing victory in 27 out of 40 seats. This decisive outcome led to the defeat of the incumbent Mizo National Front (MNF).

Baryl Vanneihsangi, one of the three women elected to the Mizoram assembly, has emerged not just as a political representative but also as a social media influencer with over 252,000 followers on Instagram. Following the recent Mizoram election results, the former TV presenter passionately addressed the topic of gender equality and encouraged women to pursue their passions.

In a statement to news agency ANI, Vanneihsangi emphasized that gender should not be a barrier to women pursuing their interests and ambitions. She urged women from all communities and social strata to embrace their passions and pursue their goals without hesitation.

Vanneihsangi, holding a Masters in Arts from the North Eastern Hill University in Shillong, brings a diverse background to her role as an MLA. Her previous experience as a corporator in the Aizawl Municipal Corporation adds depth to her understanding of local governance.

In the context of the Mizoram election, where only 16 out of 174 candidates were women, Vanneihsangi’s victory highlights the need for greater representation of women in politics. Out of the 18 seats with women candidates, Baryl Vanneihsangi stands out as a symbol of empowerment and an advocate for gender equality in Mizoram.
