Vandals in Bangladesh Destroy Statues Related to Pakistan’s Surrender, Tharoor Outraged
Images of violence and vandalism have emerged from various parts of Bangladesh following political upheaval and a coup. Protesters have targeted national monuments, leading to the damage of one such monument.
Statues at the 1971 Shaheed Memorial site in Mujibnagar have been destroyed. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has expressed concern over this incident and urged Bangladesh’s interim government to restore law and order.
Shashi Tharoor’s Statement on the Violence in Bangladesh
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor expressed his sorrow on the social media platform ‘X,’ stating, “It is heartbreaking to see images of statues at the Shaheed Memorial Complex in Mujibnagar being vandalized.
They were destroyed by anti-India miscreants. This incident is part of a series of attacks on Indian cultural centers, temples, and Hindu homes across multiple locations. The agenda of some of these protesters is crystal clear.
Mohammad Yunus and his interim government must take immediate steps to restore law and order in the interest of all Bangladeshis and people of all religions. India stands with the people of Bangladesh during these difficult times, but such chaos can never be forgiven.”
Symbol of Bangladesh’s Independence
The statues located in the Mujibnagar Complex of Bangladesh represent a historic moment when Pakistan surrendered after the 1971 war. The statues include Lieutenant General Ameer Abdullah Khan Niazi, the commander of the Pakistani army in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), who accepted a decisive defeat.
He is depicted signing the instrument of surrender in Dhaka in 1971, in the presence of the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of the Indian and Bangladeshi forces, Lieutenant General Jagjit Singh Aurora, in the Eastern Theater.
Alert Issued at India-Bangladesh Border
Continuous attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh have led to thousands of people fleeing towards India. Opponents are targeting Hindu homes and temples, creating a situation where Hindus residing in Bangladesh are attempting to cross into India.
As a result, a large number of Bangladeshi citizens and Hindus are gathering at the India-Bangladesh border. In response, a significant number of BSF (Border Security Force) personnel have been deployed along the border.
