Police Advises Against Sleeping on Footpaths: Workers Told – Inform Police If No Shelter Provided by Builders or Contractors
Many individuals have become victims of accidents while sleeping on footpaths during late nights. To prevent such accidents, the Surat Police issued an advisory urging people not to sleep on footpaths.
Alongside, builders were also advised to ensure safety measures for construction workers at construction sites. Contractors were informed that any negligence in this regard should prompt citizens to contact the police.
Hazards of Living on Footpaths
Many people migrate to Surat from various states in search of employment opportunities. A significant number of them work as laborers on construction sites. However, due to the lack of accommodation, they often end up sleeping on roadsides and footpaths with their families.
In such circumstances, those residing on footpaths are vulnerable to accidents on the road, with many cases resulting in injuries or even fatalities. To prevent such incidents, the Surat city police, under the initiative of Singanpore Police Station, extensively educated and engaged in dialogue with those living and working on footpaths.
They emphasized the risks involved in sleeping on footpaths and advised workers accordingly, aiming to reduce hit-and-run cases and ensure safer living conditions.
Workers Can Contact the Police
Inspector V.B. Gohil of Singanpore Police Station met with individuals residing on footpaths and informed them that the Surat Municipal Corporation has arrangements for shelter homes for such residents.
These shelters are provided where they are employed by builders. Workers can contact the police station if such arrangements are not in place, whether the person providing facilities or the contractor.
Encouraging Shelter for Livelihoods in Katargam Extension
It has been informed that provisions for shelter are being made in the Katargam extension area to accommodate those who have migrated here from other states in search of employment opportunities.
The municipal administration has initiated efforts to provide suitable living arrangements under its welfare system. This initiative aims to ensure that individuals do not resort to residing on footpaths and can lead secure lives while pursuing their livelihoods in Surat.
