Four New COVID-19 Variants Found in India
As COVID-19 cases continue to rise in various states, India has identified four new variants: LF.7, XFG, JN.1, and NB.1.8.1, according to ICMR Director Dr. Rajeev Bahl. These variants were sequenced from samples in South and West India.
- Though not classified as severe, WHO has placed them under “variants under monitoring”.
- The NB.1.8.1 variant carries spike protein mutations like A435S, V445H, and T478I, which may allow faster spread and partial resistance to immunity.
- The JN.1 variant remains the most common in India, detected in over 50% of samples, followed by BA.2 (26%) and Omicron sub-lineages (20%).
