Bulldozer Action at Agora Mall: Vishwamitri River Encroachments Cleared in Vadodara, Opening 3,000+ Sq Ft

Bulldozer Action Resumes on Encroachments Along Vishwamitri River: Over 3,000 Sq Ft to Be Cleared in Vadodara

In Vadodara, bulldozer operations have resumed to clear illegal encroachments on the Vishwamitri River, a major contributor to local flooding. This morning, demolition began at the illegally constructed clubhouse of Agora Mall. Spread over 3,000 square feet, the three-story clubhouse will be fully demolished, freeing up crucial land along the riverbanks.

Encroachment Clearance Begins at Agora Mall

The Vadodara Corporation’s encroachment division, equipped with 6 JCBs, officers, and police personnel, is executing the clearance. The Agora Mall’s lavish clubhouse, which housed offices and featured glass doors and luxurious interiors, is now being dismantled. The mall management, aware of the impending action, had already removed much of the furniture and other valuables. However, the demolition is underway, and the cost of removing these encroachments will be recovered from the Agora Mall’s owners.

Encroachments Contributed to the Recent Flooding

A month has passed since the devastating flood in the Vishwamitri River, which inundated Vadodara. Encroachments along the riverbanks were widely blamed for exacerbating the disaster. Following public and political outcry, the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) conducted drone and physical surveys along 23 kilometers of riverbank from Vemali to Vadsar. The survey identified 25 illegal encroachments, and 11 of them were served a 72-hour notice.

Political Fallout and Accusations

Notably, opposition leaders have claimed that previous political favoritism allowed these encroachments to continue. Allegations include the involvement of influential political figures in allowing these constructions to remain. One of the encroachments linked to the Agora Mall reportedly had ties to relatives of former Chief Minister Anandiben Patel.

Public Reaction and Demand for Further Action

Locals, gathered to witness the demolition, have expressed frustration, claiming that earlier action could have mitigated the flood’s impact. They welcomed the current bulldozer action but demanded a complete removal of all encroachments along the Vishwamitri River.

The Future of Vadodara’s Flood Management

The Vishwamitri River plays a crucial role in Vadodara’s drainage system, and the illegal structures along its banks have obstructed the natural flow of water. The VMC has committed to restoring the river’s green zones, essential for flood management and urban planning.
