RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das Honored as Governor of the Year for Exceptional Leadership and Crisis Management
RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das has been conferred with the ‘Governor of the Year’ award at the Central Banking Awards 2023, held in London on Wednesday (14th June). This recognition has been bestowed upon him for his decisive decision-making and effective management during the COVID-19 pandemic.

He faced the challenge of dealing with the first and second waves of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as Russia’s aggression towards Ukraine. Under Das’s leadership, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) implemented significant reforms, launched innovative payment systems, and provided support during the pandemic. Additionally, recently they made the decision to phase out the 2,000 rupee notes.

Das is a 1980 batch IAS officer. Shaktikanta Das is a post-graduate from St. Stephen’s College in Delhi and belongs to the 1980 batch of IAS officers. Until May 2017, he served as the Secretary of Economic Affairs. On December 12, 2018, he took charge as the 25th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). He was appointed as the Governor after the resignation of Urjit Patel.
During the demonetization in November 2016, Das was at the forefront. He also served as the fifth member of the Monetary Policy Committee. Das has represented India in forums like BRICS, International Monetary Fund (IMF), and SAARC.
