Narayana Murthy Reiterates 70-Hour Workweek Advice: I Stand Firm on My Perspective
Narayana Murthy Reiterates Call for 70-Hour Workweek
Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy has defended his suggestion for a 70-hour workweek, emphasizing that hard work is essential for India’s progress. Speaking at the CNBC Global Leadership Summit, Murthy stated, “Forgive me, I haven’t changed my perspective. I will take this view with me to my grave.”
Disappointment Over Shortened Workweek
Murthy expressed disappointment at India’s shift from a six-day to a five-day workweek in 1986. He stressed that India needs sacrifices, not comfort, to accelerate its development. Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rigorous 100-hour workweek, Murthy remarked, “When our Prime Minister works so hard, we must honor it through our own efforts.”
70-Hour Workweek Controversy in 2023
In 2023, Murthy urged India’s youth to work 70 hours a week, sparking a nationwide debate. While his remarks faced criticism for potential health concerns, they also received substantial support from those sharing his vision of hard work driving progress.
Reflection on Family Involvement in Business
Earlier in January, Murthy acknowledged that keeping family out of corporate decisions might have been a mistake. He stated, “Corporate governance seemed to mean excluding family. However, family-run businesses were the norm at the time, and their inclusion wasn’t necessarily harmful.”
Legacy of Infosys Leadership
Murthy co-founded Infosys in 1981, leading it to become India’s second-largest tech company. He served as CEO until 2002 and later as Chairman until 2006. After retiring as Chairman Emeritus in 2011, he returned in 2013 as Executive Chairman, with his son Rohan Murthy assisting him in an executive role.
Murthy’s vision for relentless hard work continues to shape conversations about India’s development and work culture.
