Adani Group to Redevelop Asia’s Largest Slum in Mumbai The Maharashtra government has granted final approval to Adani Group for the redevelopment of Dharavi slum. CEO of the project, SVR Srinivas, announced that the state government has officially awarded the project to the Adani Group.

Earlier this year, on November 29, Adani Properties won the bid for the slum redevelopment project, offering a bid of INR 5,069 crore.

The redevelopment will encompass various sections of the Dharavi slum and aims to provide improved living conditions. The residents will be temporarily relocated to camps during the redevelopment process, followed by the construction of new homes.

January 1, 2000: Free Homes Provided to Existing Residents

The Dharavi redevelopment project is worth 23,000 crores. As part of the project, those residing in Dharavi before January 1, 2000, will be given free homes. However, those who arrived between 2000 and 2011 will have to pay a cost.

8 Global Companies Showed Interest in the Project

Apart from the Adani Group, DLF Group came second with a bid of INR 2,025 crores, while Naman Group’s bid got canceled. Eight global companies showed interest in the project, but ultimately only three submitted the necessary documents for bidding.

Dharavi’s Slum Spread Across 240 Hectares

Dharavi’s slum is spread across 240 hectares, accommodating approximately 1 million people. The Maharashtra government has declared the entire area as a notified development zone and established a special planning authority for its development.

This project was first proposed in 1999.

In 1999, the BJP-Shiv Sena government first proposed the Dharavi redevelopment project. Then, in 2003-04, the Maharashtra government decided to develop Dharavi as an integrated planned township and approved a project for it, calling for tenders. In 2011, the government canceled all tenders and prepared a master plan. The Aditya Thackeray-led government then released new tenders in October 2022. Prior to this, Uddhav Thackeray’s government had rejected the bid for this project in 2019.

After the release of the film “Slumdog Millionaire” in 2008, the popularity of this area grew. The film received numerous awards and gained international recognition. Following its release, it became a popular tourist attraction. Many tourists visit here to catch a glimpse of life in Indian slums.

Dharavi’s Inhabitation by English in 1882

Dharavi was inhabited by the English in 1882. It was initially established to provide cheap accommodation for laborers. Over time, the population grew, and slums were formed. The land here is owned by the government, but people have constructed slums on it.
