Australian hockey player Tom Craig has been handed a 12-month suspension by Australia’s sports regulatory body following his arrest for allegedly attempting to purchase cocaine during the Paris 2024 Olympics. The 29-year-old player’s arrest occurred after Australia’s campaign ended in the tournament.
Hockey Australia’s Statement on the Suspension
Hockey Australia released a statement explaining that their Integrity Unit had conducted an investigation into the incident and subsequently decided to suspend Craig for 12 months. “Following the investigation of his arrest, the decision was made to suspend Craig for one year,” the statement read.
Craig Released Without Charge, But Faces Consequences
Reports indicate that Craig was released without charge after attempting to buy cocaine on August 7, 2024. Despite not facing legal charges, his actions have led to a suspension from professional play.
Six-Month Full Suspension, Behavior-Dependent Return
Hockey Australia clarified that Craig will be fully suspended for six months. The remaining six months of the suspension will depend on his behavior during this period. He will be eligible for team selection in 2025, provided his conduct meets the required standards.
Australian Team’s Performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics
During the Paris Olympics, the Australian men’s hockey team finished in sixth place after being defeated 0-2 by the Netherlands in the quarter-finals. Craig contributed one goal to Australia’s campaign during the tournament.
