Team India Announces Squad for Zimbabwe Tour: Shubman Gill to Captain, Young Players Get Opportunity
BCCI announced a 15-member Indian team on Monday for the upcoming tour of Zimbabwe. The team will play a 5-match T-20 series at Harare Sports Club from July 6th to July 14th.
Shubman Gill, who was a traveling reserve in the T20 World Cup, has been named the captain of the Indian team. However, the board has not announced the name of the vice-captain. Shubman Gill becomes the 46th captain of India and the 14th captain in the T-20 format.
The Indian team last toured Zimbabwe in 2022, playing a 3-match ODI series. The team won all three matches, clinching the series 3-0. India last played a T20 series against Zimbabwe in 2016, winning the series 2-1.
Gill Captains Gujarat in IPL
Shubman Gill has been leading the Gujarat Titans in the IPL. He captained the team last season, although Gujarat was eliminated in the league round. After trading Hardik Pandya, Gujarat appointed Gill as the captain.
Opportunity for Nitish Reddy
Selectors have given an opportunity to Nitish Kumar Reddy, who plays for the IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad. This is his first selection for Team India. Reddy has previously been part of India’s B team. Last season, he scored 303 runs in 13 matches for Sunrisers, including two half-centuries.
Team India Playing World Cup
The Indian team is currently playing in the T-20 World Cup. Their last Super 8 match is scheduled against Australia on Monday. So far, Team India remains unbeaten in the World Cup.
