President Wants India to Host Olympics; PM Modi Supports Kabaddi Inclusion

President Droupadi Murmu expressed India’s excitement about hosting the 2036 Olympic Games. If the 2036 Games are held in India, it would rapidly develop the sports culture in the country and inspire new players to enter sports.

Inclusion of Kabaddi in the Olympics

Speaking with senior editors of PTI at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President suggested that games like Kabaddi should also be included in the Olympics. At the recently concluded Paris Olympics in August, India won a total of 6 medals, including 5 bronze and one silver.

Love for Watching Indian Sports

President Murmu stated, “I enjoy watching sports, but I rarely get the opportunity to do so. Whenever I get a chance, I prefer watching Indian sports. The Olympics should be held in India. Its arrival will empower athletes.”

Hosting Possibilities until 2026

The 2028 Olympics are scheduled to be held in the United States and the 2032 Olympics in Australia. No decision has been made regarding the hosting of the 2036 Games, as the International Olympic Committee may decide on hosting by 2026 or 2027. Besides India, Saudi Arabia, Poland, Indonesia, Mexico, and Qatar are also contenders for hosting.

PM Modi’s Desire to Host the Olympics

Before President Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed a desire to host the Olympic Games in his speech on August 15. He is confident that the country can host a showpiece event like the Olympics. Modi stated, “It is India’s dream to host the 2036 Olympic Games. We have also begun preparations for it.”

Murmu Played Badminton with Saina Nehwal

Recently, President Murmu played badminton with shuttler Saina Nehwal, who won an Olympic medal for India. She also posted a photo with Nehwal on social media. Both played badminton at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Murmu posted a photo with Nehwal and wrote, “Natural love for sports.” The President also flagged off the trophy tour of the Durand Cup, Asia’s oldest football tournament.

India’s Performance at the Paris Olympics

The Paris Olympics concluded on August 11. India ranked 71st, winning 5 bronze and one silver medal. The country’s only silver medal was won by javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, while 5 bronze medals came from shooting, wrestling, and hockey. India won 3 medals in shooting.

Medal Tally at the Olympics

In the Olympic medal tally, the United States topped with a total of 125 medals, including 40 golds, while China was second with 91 medals and 40 golds.
