Pat Cummins Takes Helm as Sunrisers Hyderabad Captain, Coaching Staff Changes
Sunrisers Hyderabad has appointed Australia’s Pat Cummins as their new captain for the upcoming IPL season. The team announced this information on social media. Cummins will take over the position from South Africa’s Adan Markram, who captained the team in the last season and ended up at the 10th spot.
Coaching Staff Changes for Sunrisers
Sunrisers had previously made changes to their coaching staff as well. New Zealand’s James Franklin will now take over the role of bowling coach in place of South Africa’s Dale Steyn. Steyn had taken a break from IPL due to personal reasons. The team is aiming for a fresh start under Cummins’ captaincy.
Cummins’ Success with Australia
Under Pat Cummins’ leadership, Australia won two ICC titles in 2023. The team defeated India in November to clinch the T20 World Cup. Earlier, they had also secured the World Test Championship Trophy by defeating India in June. Cummins’ leadership skills impressed Sunrisers, leading to his appointment as captain.
Marakram’s Performance for Sunrisers
South Africa’s Adan Markram had captained SRH in the previous season. The team managed to win only 4 out of 14 matches and finished at the 10th position, failing to qualify for the playoffs. In the 2022 season, the team had finished at the 9th position but couldn’t qualify for the playoffs.
Marakram’s Role in South Africa’s T20 League
Currently, Adan Markram serves as the captain of the Eastern Cape in South Africa’s T20 league. Under his captaincy, the team won the championship in 2024 by defeating Durban Super Giants. Markram has also led the team to two consecutive titles in the past two seasons.
First Match on March 23 for SRH
The Hyderabad team will kick off their IPL campaign with their new captain and coaching staff on March 23. The 17th season of the tournament will begin with a match between Bangalore and Chennai on March 22. On the following day, SRH will face KKR in Kolkata for their first match.
