Kohli May Open in T20 World Cup 2024: BCCI Discussion; Tournament Set for June
Star batter Virat Kohli could potentially open alongside Rohit Sharma in the T20 World Cup 2024. The T20 World Cup this year will be held in June in America and the West Indies. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) convened a meeting in Mumbai a fortnight ago regarding this matter. Present at this meeting were the Indian team captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Rahul Dravid, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar.
According to media reports, discussions were held in the BCCI meeting regarding the possibility of giving Virat Kohli an opening role alongside Rohit. Kohli had sought clarity from the team management regarding his role in the T20 World Cup earlier. The team management has also provided him with clarity on this matter.
Kohli hadn’t played in the T20 World Cup until a few months ago. In fact, until some time ago, there were many uncertainties regarding Kohli’s place in the T20 team. Reports suggest that after the ODI World Cup last year when Rohit, Dravid, and selectors met, Kohli’s position in the T20 team wasn’t certain. However, there have been significant changes in the past few months.
Returns to T20 Internationals Nearly Two Years Later
Rohit and Kohli returned to T20 internationals after nearly two years, from the 2022 T20 World Cup until the 2023 ODI World Cup. Kohli had announced his availability for the home series against Afghanistan in January of this year. Both of them returned to T20 internationals after nearly two years in this format. In both matches, Kohli batted at number three, partnering with successful Jayaswal for the start of the innings. However, changes can be expected in the opening players for the upcoming T20 World Cup in June.

In the latest IPL season, Kohli has been opening for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Even in this season, opening, he holds the Orange Cap with 361 runs in seven matches at a strike rate of 147. He has been consistent throughout.
Kohli’s Experience as an Opener in International Cricket
Kohli started his international career as an opener in ODIs against Sri Lanka in 2008. After some time, he moved to the number three slot. Kohli has a commendable record as an opener in T20 internationals. The former captain has scored 400 runs in 9 matches.
