Jasprit Bumrah to Miss IPL 2025 Opener; LSG’s Mayank Yadav Also in Recovery, Expected to Return by Early April

Mumbai Indians’ star pacer Jasprit Bumrah and Lucknow Super Giants’ (LSG) young fast bowler Mayank Yadav are expected to miss the initial matches of IPL 2025. Both players are currently undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru.

Bumrah’s Recovery Progressing Well

According to a report by TOI, Bumrah’s medical reports are positive, and he has resumed bowling at the COE. However, concerns remain over his availability for the opening matches of IPL 2025. He is expected to make a comeback in the first week of April.

Injury During Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Bumrah sustained a lower-back injury during the final Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Due to this, he was also ruled out of the upcoming Champions Trophy. On the other hand, Mayank Yadav has been struggling with a muscle strain since IPL 2024 and has played only three domestic and international matches since then.

Mayank Yadav’s Impressive Debut

Mayank made his IPL debut last year for LSG, delivering a stunning performance with figures of 3 wickets for 27 runs in 4 overs, earning him the Player of the Match award. He became the first fast bowler to win this award on debut. His express pace—clocking 155.8 kmph—made him a sensation among cricket fans.

Bumrah to be Eased Back into Action

Reports suggest that Bumrah is unlikely to play Mumbai Indians’ first 3-4 matches. While he has started bowling, he is yet to reach full intensity. The medical team will only clear him to play once he can bowl at full strength without discomfort.

Team India’s Focus on England Tour

Following the IPL, Team India is scheduled for a five-match Test series in England. Given this, the management is closely monitoring Bumrah’s fitness and will permit him to participate in the IPL only once he is fully recovered.

Search for Backup Pacers

With injury concerns surrounding both Bumrah and Mohammad Shami, the selectors are exploring backup fast-bowling options for the England tour. Alongside Mohammed Siraj, selectors are keeping an eye on emerging pacers like Harshit Rana, Akash Deep, Mukesh Kumar, and Arshdeep Singh. The India-A tour before the England series will be crucial for young pacers to prove their credentials.
