IPL Teams Seek Retention of 8 Players Ahead of Mega Auction, Demand Increase in Purse

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has called a meeting of Indian Premier League (IPL) team owners, which will take place in Ahmedabad on April 16th. Discussions regarding the mega auction and player retention numbers will be held during this meeting.

According to reports from the Times of India, there is a push to increase the number of retained players in this year’s mega auction. IPL team owners hold differing opinions on this matter, and there is no clear consensus on the number, leading to demands for clarification from the BCCI.

BCCI Working on League Advancement

A source within the BCCI has informed the Times of India that things are still in the preliminary stages. The BCCI is working towards advancing the league, with player retention being crucial. Most team owners support this decision, allowing them to retain up to eight players before the mega auction.

What Are the Rules of Player Retention?

Currently, as per retention rules, a team can retain up to four players. At the same time, through the Right to Match (RTM) card, one player can be included in the team. In such a scenario, teams are allowed to retain up to five players. Any team is granted an exemption to retain a maximum of two foreign players.

Teams Demand Increase in Purse Amount

Apart from player retention, teams are also demanding an increase in the purse amount. Currently, each team has ₹90 crores in the mega auction. Franchises are requesting to increase it from ₹90 crores to ₹100 crores.
