MS Dhoni to Lead Chennai Super Kings for IPL 2024: Hardik Pandya Stays with Gujarat, Mumbai Releases Jofra Archer, Kolkata Releases Shardul

Former Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is set to lead the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the upcoming IPL season, while Hardik Pandya will take charge of the Gujarat Titans (GT). The list of retained and released players for the IPL franchise in 2024 was announced on Sunday, marking the latest date for retention and release.

Two significant trades have taken place in this season. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) traded Shahbaz Ahmed to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for Manki Dagar, and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) acquired Avesh Khan in exchange for Devdutt Padikkal from Rajasthan Royals (RR). Ben Stokes and Joe Root have not been retained for this season.

Players like Shardul Thakur and Joe Root have been released for this season, indicating that their names will be up for auction on December 19.

IPL Franchise Auction: Minimum Bid Cap Raised to INR 100 Crores from INR 5 Crores

For this year’s mini-auction, the team’s purse has been increased by INR 5 Crores. This implies that, until the previous year, teams could retain players up to INR 95 Crores, and now they can retain players up to INR 100 Crores.

The ability to buy players in the upcoming auction will be determined by the retention window during the retention and release process. If a team releases a player for INR 10 Crores, they can buy them back in the auction for INR 15 Crores (INR 10 Crores + additional INR 5 Crores).

Dhoni said, “Retirement is easy now; it will be tough to work hard for the next season. This is the best time to announce retirement when you are in good spirits. It will be challenging to stay disciplined and fit for the next 9 months and play another IPL season. My gratitude to everyone. There will be a meet from my side. It’s not that simple for my body.”

After winning the IPL 2023 trophy, Dhoni had said, “If you have the energy, now is the best time to announce retirement. It will be difficult to work hard for the next 9 months and play another IPL season. This is not easy for my body.
