Hamilton Masakadza Resigns as Zimbabwe Cricket Director: Unlikely to Make it to T20 World Cup; Coach Removed 3 Months Ago

Former cricketer Hamilton Masakadza has resigned from his position as the director of Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC). His decision came after the team failed to qualify for the 2024 T20 World Cup, prompting Masakadza to step down. Just three months earlier, the team’s coach, Dav Whatmore, also resigned from his position.

Masakadza had retired from cricket in 2019. However, he was appointed as the director in October of the same year.

Masakadza expressed disappointment after losing to Uganda. In his resignation letter, he wrote, “After carefully considering the successes and failures of Zimbabwe Cricket, I have decided to step down. While our team has performed well, the failure to qualify for the T20 World Cup is disappointing.”

“We are the only full member team not participating in the T20 World Cup. Losing to Uganda is the lowest point of my career. I take full responsibility for this and resign from my post,” he added.

Zimbabwe will host the Under-19 World Cup after 2 years, Masakadza said, “It was difficult for me to make this decision, but I remain committed to Zimbabwe cricket. My focus remains on hosting the Under-19 World Cup in 2026 and the One Day International World Cup in 2027.”

Zimbabwe will host the 2027 ODI World Cup along with Namibia and South Africa, while the 2026 Under-19 World Cup will be co-hosted by Zimbabwe and Namibia.

Under Masakadza’s leadership, the team participated in the 2022 World Cup. Masakadza served as Zimbabwe cricket’s director from 2019 to 2024. During this time, the team qualified for the 2022 T20 World Cup, reaching the Super-12 stage and defeating Pakistan in the group stage matches. Additionally, the board organized qualifiers for the 2022 T20 World Cup and the 2023 ODI World Cup during Masakadza’s tenure.
