18-Year-Old Gukesh Becomes Youngest World Chess Champion, Defeats Defending Champion from China
Indian Grandmaster D. Gukesh has achieved a historic feat by becoming the youngest-ever World Chess Champion at the age of 18. Gukesh defeated defending champion Ding Liren from China in the 14th game, clinching the championship with a score of 7.5-6.5. This victory makes him the second Indian to win the World Chess Championship, following Viswanathan Anand’s triumph in 2012.
A Historic Battle
The championship saw intense competition, with Gukesh winning the third, eleventh, and fourteenth games, while Ding Liren secured victories in the first and twelfth games. The remaining matches ended in a draw, including the 13th game, which concluded after 68 moves.
Youngest World Champion
Gukesh’s achievement as the youngest World Chess Champion is a testament to his incredible talent and dedication. Previously, at the age of 17, he won the FIDE Candidates Chess Tournament, becoming the youngest to do so.
A Record-Breaking Championship
This year’s championship also marked a milestone in the 138-year history of the International Chess Federation (FIDE). For the first time, two Asian players competed for the world title. Gukesh’s victory earned him a prize of ₹20.86 crore (US$2.5 million).
Who is D. Gukesh?
Dommaraju Gukesh, a chess prodigy from Chennai, was born on May 7, 2006. He began playing chess at the age of 7 under the guidance of Bhaskar Nagayya, an international chess player. Later, the legendary Viswanathan Anand mentored him. Gukesh’s parents, a doctor and a microbiologist, have supported his journey to the top.

In September, during the Budapest Chess Olympiad, Gukesh played a pivotal role in India’s victory in the open category, winning the final game and securing the championship for the nation.
