Gautam Gambhir in Action Mode After Champions Trophy Win, Major Decision Expected for Test Team

After India’s victory in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, the Indian players are now gearing up for the upcoming IPL 2025 season. Meanwhile, Team India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, has shifted into action mode, making preparations for the five-match Test series against England. Reports suggest that Gambhir might travel to England with the India ‘A’ team ahead of the senior team’s tour to explore different squad options and provide opportunities to young players in Test cricket.

Gambhir to Travel with India ‘A’ Team to England

India’s England tour is set to commence on June 20, but reports indicate that head coach Gambhir will leave earlier with the India ‘A’ team. If this happens, it will be the first time that a senior team’s head coach accompanies the India ‘A’ team on an overseas tour.

A BCCI source revealed that Gambhir is planning a roadmap for all formats over the next two years, extending up to the 2027 ODI World Cup. This phase also includes preparations for the World Test Championship and the 2026 T20 World Cup.

The source further stated that after returning from Australia, Gambhir has been in discussions with the BCCI. He expressed his desire to travel with the India ‘A’ team to England to get a clear understanding of the reserve pool. Notably, Gambhir played a key role in India’s Champions Trophy triumph by backing several wildcard players, and he is likely to continue focusing on unearthing fresh talent for the future.

Addressing Key Challenges in the Test Team

One of Gambhir’s primary concerns is strengthening the Indian Test squad. With the India ‘A’ tour to England, he is expected to look for a solid opener to replace Rohit Sharma in the long run. The middle order also requires reinforcements, as players like Abhimanyu Easwaran and Sarfaraz Khan haven’t received significant opportunities despite being part of previous squads.

Additionally, Gambhir is reportedly considering young talents such as Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair for the Test team. With concerns surrounding Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness, he is also keen on finding a reliable fast bowler for the England tour to build a strong pace attack for the future.

As Team India transitions into a new phase under Gambhir’s leadership, his proactive approach indicates a strategic shift towards long-term success in all formats.
