Former Indian Cricketer Commits Suicide by Jumping Off Building: Remembering Jones’s Career

Former Indian Fast Bowler David Johnson (52) Passes Away

Former Indian fast bowler David Johnson (52) passed away on Thursday, June 20th, in Bengaluru. He reportedly committed suicide by jumping from the fourth floor of his apartment. Johnson played two Test matches for India in 1996, where he took three wickets.

In domestic cricket, Johnson played 39 first-class matches for Karnataka, taking 125 wickets, including four five-wicket hauls. He was one of the fastest Indian bowlers. During the 1995-96 Ranji Trophy season, he took 10 wickets for 152 runs against Kerala, which earned him a place in the Indian team.

Debut in 1996, Later Toured South Africa

David Johnson made his Test debut in 1996 against Australia in New Delhi. During Australia’s tour of India, he successfully dismissed Michael Slater. This right-handed fast bowler was also part of the South Africa tour but only got the chance to play in the first Test, where he took the wickets of Herschelle Gibbs and Brian McMillan.

Tributes from Jay Shah and Anil Kumble

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah expressed his condolences on the incident. Shah wrote, “My deepest sympathies to the family and friends of our former Indian fast bowler David Johnson. His contribution to the game will always be remembered.” Former Indian leg-spinner Anil Kumble wrote on X, “Saddened to hear the news of my cricket partner David Johnson’s passing. Heartfelt condolences to his family. Gone too soon ‘Benny’.”

Struggles in International Cricket Due to Fitness

Despite his promising start and excellent speed, David Johnson struggled with consistency and fitness in international cricket. He continued to play domestic cricket for Karnataka, where he found more success. Johnson made significant contributions to his team’s bowling attack. After retiring from the game, he dedicated himself to coaching and mentoring young cricketers.
